Frequently Asked Questions

Digitisation of literature and maps that so far are only available in print ensures persistent electronic availability in Open Access.

We digitise literature and maps from geosciences that are in the public domain and that have not been digitised somewhere else.
Preferentially, we digitise material that is part of the comprehensive collections of the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen). Please search for literature in the “Göttinger-Universitäts-Katalog” (GUK) and for maps in the “IKAR – Altkartendatenbank” (IKAR).
Additionally, we offer geoscience research institutions and editors to digitise their institutional literature (e.g. institutional publication series and journals and other grey literature that is not released in publishing houses) which is so far only available in print. Please contact us (email).

We will check if another library is able to provide us with the requested material.

FID GEO and the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)” bear digitisation costs of literature and maps from the geoscience of the solid earth.
This service is managed by specialists from the former “Sondersammelgebiete” of the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen)and the “Göttinger Digitalisierungszentrum (GDZ)” who are familiar with the digitisation of geoscience literature and maps.

  • We advise and help you to accomplish your digitisation request for material that is available in the collections of the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen) in time and ensure comfortable electronic availability.
  • We advise geoscience research institutions and editors how to digitise their institutional literature (e.g. institutional publication series and journals and other grey literature that is not released in publishing houses) which is by now only available in print. We offer support in selecting the appropriate license agreement.
  • We provide metadata for the digitised material to ensure high visibility in search engines worldwide.
  • We ensure persistent availability and high visibility of the digitised material in the geoscience research community by making it available in the FID GEO repository.

For your digitisation request, please contact us via e-mail or give us a call (+49 (0)551 39-25244, Norbert Pfurr; or -29738, Malte Semmler)

Digitisation via FID GEO follows the rules of the “DFG Praxisregeln-Digitalisierung”. The “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)” defines Standards for the digitisation quality, for metadata and for persistent availability in Open Access.

The digitised maps are offered as PDF, sometimes additionally in JPG and/or TIFF format.

The “Göttinger Digitalisierungszentrum (GDZ)” is the digitisation service contractor of FID GEO. GDZ was established in 1997 with funds of the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)”. It serves as a national and international digitising competence center for libraries and research institutions.

TIFF-masterfiles of the digitised material are redundantly saved in the archiving system of the “Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung Göttingen (GWDG)”.
Additionally, the digitised material will be stored and made available in the FID GEO repository.

Institutional services for digitisation usually are not able to offer the same degree of service quality as specialised services such as FID GEO.

FID GEO and the “Göttinger Digitalisierungszentrum (GDZ)”, the international leading digitisation competence center for libraries and research institutions, are cooperating closely to process your digitisation request. Together with the GDZ we make sure that your digitised material is persistently available worldwide and highly visible in geoscience research communities.
